Flower Power Tag

Here, I have created a simple tag with some handmade flowers and brads. Flowers are one of the simplest and most versalite images that are depicted in greeting cards and tags. These flowers are so simple to make and are doable even if you don't have stamps, or stickers, or an artistic hand to draw your own flowers.

1. Find two circular objects (of slightly different diameters). Being a crafter, I used a glue stick for one circle, and a spool of thread for the other. Or, you can be really awesome and draw your own circles!

2. Trace your circles onto different papers (or the same - it doesn't matter!) and cut them out.

3. Take a pencil to the circles and pretend like your slicing a pizza with 8 slices.

4. Cut small slits at each of the pencil lines, but don't go all the way to the center because then you'll have 2-half flowers!

5. Erase your pencil marks, adhere the smaller circle atop the larger, and add a coordinating brad to the center.

For the tag pictured above, I added a small piece of black cardstock to the back of the tag for extra depth and some bakers twine to attach to a gift. The flower stems were drawn on with black permanent pen.

Materials: White, black, magenta cardstock, patterned paper, permanent black ink, brads, bakers twine
Size: Approx 2" x 3.5"

Watercolor Embossed Flowers

Watercoloring is so hot right now. Spoken in creepy Will Ferrel voice. Oh, and did I mention that it's also really fun? The best part is that there is not "wrong" way to do things. First I embossed two different sized flowers from the stamp set (I had to mask the smaller flower to get the image that you see.) Then, I took several colors of distress ink, rubbed the pad right on an acrylic block, took some metallic rub and smeared that on the block, added some water and went to work.

What I learned during this project is that you really do need to use watercolor paper. It's hard to tell in the photos, but the paper is majorly warped. When I adhered the front panel to my card base, I actually made it wrinkle around the edges because it tried too hard (unsuccessfully) to make it flat. I ended up having to stitch around the edges to get it to not look TERRIBLE. The stitching helped, but it still isn't nice and crisp. So next time, I'll try watercolor paper and see if that helps.

Materials: White cardstock, Hero Arts Blossom Art stamp set, Versmark ink, black embossing powder, distress ink in fired brick, spiced marmalade, and mustard seed, Viva gold metallic rub. Sewing machine.

Hello Plaid Tag

Awhile back, I showed several cards using a strip of flowers cut from a sheet of patterned paper - (to see previous post, click here). I had some leftover pieces of flower (and since they were so lovingly cut, I decided not to trash them). I colored them a darker pink to match the plaid and added a handwritten sentiment.

Materials: White cardstock, patterned paper, sharpie, organza ribbon, embroidery floss

Vellum Flower Card

I don't usually use embossing folders because I like flat backgrounds so that the focal point really pops. However, sometimes it's nice to have a soft background texture. Dry embossing is a very easy way to achieve this soft texture without distracting from the focal point.

Flower Strip Stationery

Sometimes the best place to look for card designs in patterned paper. After all, someone designed the paper to look visually appealling, so why not use the existing design concepts to create something beautiful. These cards were created from paper that had a solid brown background lined with parallel strips of flowers. I didn't really like the paper because it was so straight and flat, but I thought the flowers in a row were interesting. So I cut out the flowers. Was it tedious? Yes, it was. Did I enjoy it? You betcha! So the end result: I kept the concept that I liked from the paper, but got rid of the design concept that was not my style. Voila! A unique card that fits my style. I left the blue and pink blank so I that I can add a message to fit the occasion later. The "happy birthday" sentiment on the red flower card was stamped with StazOn black and a TPC stamp set.

Materials: White cardstock, flowers cut from patterned paper, StazOn in jet black, TPC "sentiments" clear stamp set

Tissue Paper Flowers

Here is another card design that I recently created that is for sale (see bottom of post). You know how a lot of retailers will give you tissue paper when you buy clothing from their store? Well, I just hate throwing that stuff out, but my stash is getting a little out of control. Using tissue paper on cards provides a really fun dimension and is a great way to repurpose a freebie into something nice - and the best part is, you don't need much! The buttons came off of one of my husband's favorite dress shirts that finally bit the dust.

The buttons are sewn directly to the flowers and the flowers are then adhered directly to the card base. The inside of the card is free of holes and thread of any kind.

Each card is constructed completely by hand from the cutting and scoring of the base to the design and creation of the flowers.

Specifications:
Material: 118 lb. white cotton cardstock, tissue paper in three shades of pink, buttons, embroidery floss, archival-safe permanent black pen.
Cards are sold individually and come with a coordinating patterned envelope handcrafted by me. I use remoistenable envelope glue that works exactly like the glue on envelopes that you can buy in stores.
Each card has been left blank inside and out, but can be customized with my sister's beautiful calligraphy to suit your needs. See Etsy posting for more details.
Size: Standard A2 card and envelope: Card measures 4 1/4" 5 1/2", envolope measures 4 3/8" x 5 3/4"

Because each card is made entirely by hand, there will be small variations even in cards of the same design. Cards are packaged and sealed in a cellophane bag and will ship from Memphis, TN. They are available for purchase here.
